The start of the 2009 season saw the team travel to San Diego to participate in the San Diego Invitational Rugby Tournament where talent from all over North America gathered to compete. Our team was able to play three full games that saw us winning one but losing two. This trip allowed our players to mentally prepare for the big season that was planned. We were also able to watch the IRB USA 7’s tournament where the best 7’s players in the world made their only North American stop on the 7’s tour.
Following a successful tryout and lots of conditioning and practising the team traveled to Vulcan, Alberta to participate in the Star Trek Invitaitonal Tournament. After winning our pool we played the host Count Central team in the tournament final. Clearly this team was special, they didn’t allow a single point to be scored on them, defeating the hosts by a score of 46-0.
The regular season was spectacular. The team went undefeated and eventually went on to play Ross Sheppard in the City Final. This was a nail biter. The scoring went back and forth until a last minute drive resulted in the Lords scoring a try to put them up as the whistle was blown. The final score in the City Final was 24-19. With this win the Boys Rugby team won their first Tier 1 City Championship in team history and their first Provincial berth also ranked number one.
Provincials saw the perfect ending to an outstanding season. The Scona boys went on to not only a perfect record for the season but they weren’t scored on in the Provincial Tournament. They defeated Grande Prairie, Lindsay Thurber, and in the Championship LCI. Some of the comments heard around the pitch that weekend were that this team played like a men’s premier team, they hit like one, they ran like one and they played like one. Not only did they win the Tier 1 Boys Provincial title but they were named Most Sportsmanlike, a feet not achieved by a champion in over 20 years with ASAA. Thank you to all the players, parents and fans for a great season.
