The weather hasn’t been the best to start the season. That hasn’t stopped us from going out and playing though. Last weekend saw us start the season by going to Strathmore, Alberta to play some pre-season rugby. Our first game was against Highwood High and it saw us score three tries for a 15-0 final score. The next game was played in some sideways wind and snow and saw us defeat County Central from Vulcan 5-0. The final game of the day was against the host school from Strathmore. It was a tough game that was eventually settled with a final score of 5-0 for us. It was a good start to what has been a very slow season.
After Strathmore, came the annual Strathcona Invitational Rugby Tournament. This year saw a touring team from Hokkaido, Japan come to play two games of 7’s rugby. This was the first exposure to the fast paced game of 7’s that most of our players have had. The first game saw team Red play hard to a 29-7 loss. Teh second game saw team White fall 29-0 to the strong Japanese side. All in all it was a great learning experience that the players really enjoyed.
This season saw a very late start due to the weather. Our league structure was set and it saw us playing in three cross pool games. The first game saw us win over McNally 17-10. Our second game was a very physical and close loss to W.P. Wagner 22-17. Our last game was a one sided affair in our favour, 68-5. At the end of the regular season our team finished with a 2-1 record. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to qualify for playoffs. The season was fun and saw a lot great friendships happen. It also lit a fire for our returning players. Look out for us next season in the new Public/Metro league. Thanks for all of your support.
